Welcome to the Department of Genetics

Genetics at La Trobe maintains the greatest breadth of any genetics department in Australia, with research interests which can be categorised as the molecular and quantitative biology of the Australian biota, including a strong program in human molecular biology. To serve its research and teaching priorities, the department maintains the full range of molecular and other genetical techniques. A particular strength is conservation genetics.

In the area of  Genetics, the Department offers subjects at first, second and third-year levels as part of the science degrees. An honours degree in genetics and a postgraduate diploma are available to graduates of La Trobe and other universities.  Masters and doctoral degrees by research are available.

Areas of Study

The subjects offered cover a wide range of topics in Genetics, including molecular, ecological conservation, human molecular, and genomics, as well as molecular and organismal evolution. Human biology and human genetics including the origins of modern humans, human behavioural genetics, immunogenetics, forensic genetics, life style and disease are also studied. All subjects include a significant practical component.
